Preparing a Child for a Visit to an Optometrist in Austin

Children often don’t do well with change. Switch around your house and see what happens. Put the living room furniture in the dining room, the dining room furniture in the living room, and switch around the bedrooms and they’ll likely take a little while before they’re able to adjust well to it. They also tend to fear new things as well, which is absolutely natural. In the case of bad things, fearing them is something that parents actually encourage, but what about when you have to take our child to an
optometrist in Austin and they are scared to go? Here are some tips to make visiting an optometrist for the first time easy.

Explaining

Even very young children can understand what an eye doctor does, you just have to make sure that you explain it in a language that they can understand. Don’t use large words, don’t make things complicated, and don’t try to explain every little part of what an eye doctor does. If your child is around seven or eight years old, which is often when they need to have their first visit to the eye doctor, you can sit down with them and can explain everything simply. Explain what an optometrist is, and how they make sure that you can see well with your eyes. Make sure also that you tell them that there is no pain when you visit an optometrist, because during a childs eye exam there very rarely is.

The Day of the Visit

It can be difficult for parents not to get nervous about their child’s first visit, as they are often worried that their child will “freak out” or will be very upset. The secret is actually in how you act. If you act as though you think they’re going to get upset, they likely will. If, however, you act calm and collected, you’ll likely find that they will act calm as well. Treat the situation like a routine one and they should calm down quickly. Make sure that you reassure them, if they ask, that you will always stay with them, as there is nothing more scary than being left alone for Austin eye exams for your first time.

At the Doctors

Once you’re at the doctors, your child should calm down a bit. Show them the Austin, Texas, eyewear that is displayed at the doctor’s office and have fun trying on a few pairs and looking in the mirror. The more relaxed they are before they go into the appointment, the more relaxed they will be during the checkup. When you are in the exam room, if they feel uncomfortable, make sure you ask if it’s permissible for you to sit with them in the exam chair. Many eye doctors have absolutely no problem with it. A visit to the eye doctor doesn’t have to be scary and can, in fact, be turned into a fun experience for both parent and child.
